Another treatment I would highly recommend for the relief of Fibromyalgia symptoms is hot stone massage. It is a truly relaxing massage which I find quite comforting given the fact that it introduces heat onto the body and in particular sore muscles. Cold stones can also be alternated but my therapist uses hot only me, which is a blessing as I don’t do cold too well. However, switching up hot and cold can be beneficial to aching and sore muscles.

Hot stone massage has been proven beneficial in the treating of the following conditions:

•Muscular aches, pains, sprains, and strains
•Poor circulation
•Rheumatic and arthritic conditions
•Fibromyalgia
•MS
•Back pain
•Stress, anxiety and tension
•Insomnia
•Depression

Because heat helps to relax and calms the body fairly quickly, the therapist is able to spend time on deep tissue work using the stone and the hand. You will not normally feel the intensity of the massage, due to the heat gently relaxing the muscles. Often the stones are coated in a fragrant, therapeutic oil which can enhance the relaxation. Therapists may also place warm stones on various points on the body to introduce the heat benefits to a particular area. Take it from me, hot stones placed on the lower back feels amazing.

Hot stone massage can:

  • boost your circulation
  • release stored tension
  • recharge your energy levels
  • relax you

As always, it is important to let your therapist know that you suffer with Fibromyalgia and also that you communicate with them how you are feeling during the treatment. Please don’t suffer in silence if the stones are too hot or the pressure too firm, a good therapist will always check in with you throughout the massage.
